Hi all, i'm a graphic artist / animator and so not too clued up on web development so forgive the lamens approach. I have designed a few joomla sites, which i need to do now. I need some advise please!
I've discovered Artisteer which is perfect for me, however i'm wanting to know if i can integrate a shopping cart before i go ahead and buy it. This is when i discovered Quickersite and Ecwid, which i wil buy if this all works together?
Looking at the Quickersite installation guide i'm confused. So this is my question:
Can i install joomla 2.5 on Linux with a MSQL database with my hosting provider (easy to do). Design my template in Artisteer and then install it through extensions (easy to do). Then install Quickersite also through extensions to integrate a shopping cart? Does it work like this? and/or is Ecwid independant and not require Quickersite to run?
Bottom line is i need a shopping cart that works with an Artisteer template on a joomla platform. Or do i not need joomla at all, just Quickersite?
Any help, advise or suggestions muchly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Hope this helps. - Dom says: (27/03/2012 12:12:10)

I have just started playing with
http://buildinternet.com/2011/07/supersized-3-2-fullscreen-jquery-slideshow/
Its free and its fun! What I needed was a slideshow driven from Flickr - this does it easily - now I just have to integrate it into quickersite
A hint - if you try the Flickr download - it doesnt work in IE9 unless you either point to a newer jq library than the one in the sample code - or force IE9 into IE8 mode - the Flickr version uses an old version of code that is supposed to be getting updated

- Pieter says: (02/09/2011 14:42:27)Back in the early days of QuickerSite, we used a snitz forum here. Untill it got hacked one fine day :) When I started reading the source code, I found out it was such a spaghetti, that I gave up on it.
I remember though that I slightly rewrote it to work fine in an iframe, and make sure that when users clicked the link to the post from within their notification messages, the QuickerSite.com website opened, and loaded the correct snitz-page in an iframe. It worked pretty well!
But QS now has its own forum. Never thought of giving them a try? - Wasps says: (02/09/2011 18:58:24)The forum is the most popular part of the site - and the oldest! If I was starting afresh - I would probably opt for the QS forum - but the site users are used to Snitz! When I problems with Snitz before I suggested moving - not popular!
The intranet feature is hopefully going to be used - utilises a QS forum. - Pieter says: (02/09/2011 20:48:23)

To set up:
1. sign up.
2. In QS, create a constant.
3. Put the constant before the last body tag in the template.
What's so special with this web app.?
You can schedule when the chat is even going to appear on your web site. In my case, the chat only appears from 9am to 6pm (US paciific time) daily. Outside "business" hours, the chat bar does not even show up.
If you want to have more than 10 simultaneous chatters you have to pay. There are tons of other features, just check it out.

I love Adobe Flashpaper 2. It cost me $75 (I think) 2-3 years ago, but it only works with Windows XP.
Here comes www.docstoc.com. No software to install, a web service which is 100% free. You can even sell your documents if you want to. When you first enter the site, you will think that it's not free, but IT IS. What they are selling are documents, not the service. Create an account, click on the Upload button to load up your document, and get the embedding codes.
Another nice place for docs and a lot more, is zoho.com, which Doc pointed it to me a while back. I prefer it over Google Docs, because I can protect the formula cells in the spreadsheets, something you can't do with Google Docs since the last time I checked. With zoho you can do remote support, and even live customer support to the visitors of your web site, plus tons of other cool stuff.

They have moved HyperCam from free to commercial paid screen capture software. Its a Camtasia lite. But for EUR29 its a nice program that does the basics of screen capture for tutorials etc. Comes with an editor that allows you to cleanup the capture. Typically about 10.5 mb per minute of capture using their defaults. Allows you to capture fixed screen area, window or whole screen.
Not bad. I'm buying it. There is an evaluation version.

Cost: $5, you can try the FULL app.for free, unlimited time.
This is by far the best and easiest Live Support app. I've seen under $200.
It runs on php and flash technology. Most hosting companies that use Windows servers, also install php, along with classic php, and asp.net. At least that is the case with godaddy.com.
Very easy to install and configure. You can configure it to functions as chatrooms (and you can have many), or as a one to one Live Support basis.
Because the dimensions never change (width, heigh), very easily you can use it within your QuickerSite by using a simple Iframe.
In fact, with the Iframe method, you can install it once, and Iframe the same app. in as many QSs as you wish.
Further suggestion: There are a few ways of doing it, but you need to figure out a way to tell your visitors whether Live Support is available at that moment, or not. You don't want your visitors asking questions to a Live Person, and not getting response, for obvious reasons.

You can have them ping up to 3 web sites per every FREE account. It used to be 100, but hey, when it is free, you can't complain. In the free monitoring service you can configure it to ping your web sites every 30 minutes, or longer. The paid version, you can go down to 5 minutes.
You get the results in RSS feeds (to display the status of the site). Also, if a server is down, you get an email.
You don't want your customers calling you with complains, or even worse, your own web site being down for hours, or even worse for several days...

Calameo: (http://en.calameo.com/) allows you to convert your word documents into attractive and interactive flip-page magazines. Calmeo allows you to import files from your computer ( OpenOffice, PDF, or Word document) and you have the ability to insert media, forms, or links. Your suggestions are very good, but for my purposes, they are not usable since they are flash based.
I used to be a huge fan of flash. I used to use flash religiously for my banners, and slideshows. Even when Apple came out against it, I did not care. But the moment Adobe announced that it will stop developing flash for mobile devices, and Android devices stop using it, it was the end of the road for me with flash. My Nexus 7 tablet does not support flash, and make it very difficult for non professionals to even install them. I had to change a tablet setting, then get a special version of Adobe flash from their archives, not easily found from their download page. And finally, even though I had to jump some hurdles just to install flash, Chrome is disabled for flash, and I can't use it to see flash content. I had to install Firefox beta for Android to see websites with flash content. How many users are willing to do all that? - nick6352683@yahoo.com says: (17/04/2013 20:38:47)It's way overdue to dump Flash, and use a technology that will work on any device. Enter Javascript, and specifically jquery. I know Pieter is finally becoming a big fan of jquery.
And here is a good start to find page flip apps. using jquery
http://splashmagazine.com/2013/04/jquery-page-flip-plugins/ - Ailsa00 says: (18/04/2013 08:02:09)Thanks for sharing the plugins.

Now most page flip software can also help us to create HTML5 based magazine, so the magazine can be viewed on tablet

I am trying to get a client who is going to display self produced TV programming on the net (actually he owns a local TV station, pretty cool operation). He is currently using Wordpress, and his site was defaced twice just this year (he never updates Wordpress, and someone finds security hacks for it every 2-3 weeks on an average). His videos are in mp4 format. You will need a quicktime player to show the movies, and Innova does not have a quicktime button. So I initially used Coffeecup Web Video to show them. The program converts all video formats to flv. This program would have been perfect if you could control the size of the flash player, and if it had a "full screen" button.
Enter Flowplayer to the rescue: http://flowplayer.org/index.html
Absolutely free, you can buy a license if you want to rebrand the player (I'm thinking about it). And this has everything one would need (ok, I would need), to play flv videos with control buttons in any QS page. The easiest way for me was to simply Iframe.
Installation is simply copying 3 small files on the server. Configuration takes less than a minute, once you understand how to configure it.
There is a lot of documentation, but the simplest way is this:
<html>
<head>
<title>Wow! This is video</title>
<script src="path/to/the/flowplayer-3.1.4.min.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<a
href="http://www.mywebsite.com/myVideo.flv"
style="display:block;width:425px;height:300px;"
id="player">
</a>
<script language="JavaScript">
flowplayer("player", "path/to/the/flowplayer-3.1.3.swf");
</script>
</body>
</html>
Very cool stuff !

This is by far the best Quiz/Test/Tutorial maker that I have ever seen. You can run the resulting Quizes anywhere since it creates the Quiz as a flash file. You can have the results emailed to you, or saved in a database. Complete control who can take the quiz and how many times. Many types of questions are available, including images, and even sound questions. Randomize and shuffle the questions, import questions from excel, set difficulty level, and more. For complete list of features go to their web site.
http://www.wondershare.com/e-learning/index.html?4
Price: $129.
P.S. I would love to see a simple Quiz module build right into QS in the future, for testing or training purposes. Maybe, not as comprehensive as this software, but something similar which can be also used for polling (voting).

Pieter, this gives me an idea. It would be nice if the QS admin served as a Client Apps central point. We could have a "client apps" login function where we set up the app login and password. So in this case to create a Quiz, we login to QS. Then go to the Client Apps function. Then from a list we select the App and clck login. At that point, mabe the App admin would appear in an Iframe window?
We would probably need a table wit Appif, App admin program location, App program name, App password. Would this work?

Nothing beats Camtasia when it comes to recording screens, but I'm sure Wondershares demo creator is good as well.
And yes, you create the Quizes on your PC, it will result in a flash file (swf), and all you have to do is uploaded it, and display this swf in any page you want. I could not find a good web based Quiz Maker at a reasonable price, so there is a hole here to be filled.
I found some at $1,500 - $5,000, but the price range was an automatic turn off.
This is a $20 program that you can resize, optimize, and even place a watermark on pictures in bulk mode. Just select a folder with pictures in it, choose some options, like resizing pixels, output folder, optimization levels, and watermark if any, and watch the program go to work.
Not bad for the price.
